So sad that the title pretty much sums this post up but Im still going to write as much as I can about it no BS. There really isnt much to add to this other than pointing out all the times Ive seen people either ignore their "common sense" or show their glaring lack of it and adversely affect my life smh. Now to pull back from being sounding so judgmental and jus try to look at what most of us consider to be "common". Not wiping your shoes nose on someone else couch sleeve is a good place to start. Avoiding calling names (darknesses) things of that nature, just being polite and having manners is a big plus. Unfortunately for whatever reasons (developmental delay, asbergers, people dont have em and then cant teach em) we all dont share a common morality or rulebook therefore "sense" becomes quite a broadly defined and encompassing word and we have our own interpretations which leads to that title. I really am beginning to think I should hold a seminar or somethin but I digress whats common to me aint necessarily common to the dude over there and as a result my expectations are then blown to shit cause he didnt do what I thought to be an idiot proof action.
This post can also double as a lesson on expectations (or have I covered that already? Its been a long 2 months of blogging) simply because people usually should realize when their expectations are too high or unrealistic. Ive had endless debates with people about whether or not social cues (or the lack thereof) are the grounds for a legitimate shouting match and Ive had to lean as far left as possible to combat their heavily right stance but before this tangent goes fully outta control and I talk about the terrible cafeteria service Im goin to come full circle and say that often times people's ignorance (sorry I couldnt find a better word, remember lazy) is overlooked and unfortunately not taken into account often enough. Meaning that a lot of the time people jus genuinely dont know better simply put. Now that does not mean its an excuse cause "hey I didnt know" doesnt get you off (Ask R.Kelly), you gotta do the work to get better and not rest on your laurels (see the Complacency post). That being said some people REALLY dont get it though. People, effort is important (to me) and if you've gotten the same complaint at least try and look at yourself and see why and what you can do to change it so as to avoid it getting to a point where its really sad and Maury-esque (sorry Jerry) by which I mean a lot of loud angry and unnecessary screaming instead of actual communication.
Aaaaaannnnnnnd to get back to the point at hand and wrap this post up all in a nice little package with a nice little bow (Christmastime is comin), common sense doesnt exist and to hold people to some weird standard that you have set for the whole of society to adhere to is not only unfair but setting oneself up for utter frustration when people dont pick up on these imagined cues. Dont get it twisted there are things (acts, practises) that are commonly known and people shouldnt use me sayin what Ive said as an excuse to act the ass (sorry its the Trini in me) jus sayin that not everyone is as accustomed with certain things enough for it to be "common" to them. Common sense is broad and ambiguous, if its common morality you have an issue with than that is more of a grounds for a gripe....unfortunately it leads rite back down that path of not everyone has the same morality :P I feel like I can play devils advocate for paragraphs and paragraphs but since Im tired I jus want it known that common sense is a farce because what we consider common isnt common at all and the definition of sense is quite broad and ambiguous and isnt always known, taught, or internalized which totally removes all the meaning of the phrase.
Mr. James clearly missed some etiquette lessons and Charlie Murphy was more than happy to oblige all over his legs....I think we can all agree its common sense to avoidin grindin your feet in the Murphy's couch tho lol

DARKNESS TRAIN CHOO CHOO NIGGA ACK ACK ACK. DARKNESS EVERYBODY DARKNESS! ACK ACK ACK. I love that skit.
ReplyDeletehmmmm good topic, not as great a post as your religion one. i won't lie, you completely lost me with that second paragraph. tangents and run-on sentences galore; i'm not sure what the point was. the overall point of the post was gotten, though. you finished strong!!
ReplyDelete...actually, with all the back and forth and devil's advocating, i'm not quite sure what the point is.
either that: people don't have common sense and do stupid shit far too often without thinking of the consequences
OR
common sense is an abstract concept that's hard to define in any one way for all people, so to expect people to live up to certain expectation is only setting yourself up for frustration and drama cuz it's inevitable that you'll be let down.
both VERY good points, actually. as with everything, it's about moderation. there's a middle ground. and, sadly enough, finding and being able to tread that middle ground is painfully difficult for most people.
lol JP I swear your one of the few who watched the outtakes to even HEAR that joke, u deserve kudos for that.
ReplyDeleteDije well I try not to compare them jus maintain an overall standard altho I think I get wat you mean. In the 2nd sentence I was a bit all over but its purpose was to say that sometimes people just dont know any better and even tho that isnt an excuse it def should be considered before just yelling at them like your a Maury show mom looking for her baby daddy. Overall both of those were involved in the post. Its abstract and hard to define so when people do ish they sometimes jus dont know better. Common sense is a sticky wicket and I was tryin to cover both but I can see how it would/could be confusing. Fortunately u were smart enough to figure it out AND leave a blueprint for others to follow :D
