"Im jus sayin you could better".....tell me how often you've heard THAT lately? I know Im not the only one that feels like Twitter/BBM/Facebook and all other sources of social media are being DOMINATED by Drake quotes and that got me to thinking...why? Drake isnt an especially thuggish or gifted rapper by the standards we have for rappers yet the hardest niggas will check for him. He isnt the prettiest guy around either but he could probably have 9/10 girls in any given scenario if he wanted and its an enigma of a mystery to many. So that leads me back to my original question of Why?
Now I can only speak on my behalf (filthy lie! I can speak for all of you I jus choose not to this time :p) but I feel like the appeal of Drake is jus his relateability. His verse on Aston Martin Music reverberates through my being because I can relate to it o so well meanwhile he can make any random track or appearance and we will all quote and sing and do our best Drake spazzing hand movement imitation. Relation is one of the best tools to expand and establish a fanbase and when I heard this guy who used to pretend to be in a wheelchair on an ok teen soap opera wanted to rap I literally DIED laughing. Then So Far Gone and Mr October and shit like that started to come out and suddenly he was the realest nigga around. What changed?
The answer, absolutely nothing. Drake has never been anything but himself and love him or hate him Aubrey is jus the guy most of us can rock with currently. He's not ridiculouslyinsane "hood" as T.I or Tunechi or as underappreciated "deep"/ "conscience" as Common or Mos Def or even as good a singer as "insert R&B guy". What he is honest, almost to a fault and he wears himself on his sleeve. Alone any of these things would kill him but together, it makes for a monster of an artist. I know, personally I cant belt like my name was Trey or Ursher but I know I can carry a tune. I know Im not hood but Im definietly not unfamiliar with the territory being that I grew up jus down the street and I know Im not the smartest guy out but I am educated and I know Im knowledgeable as well as honest to a fault (sometimes). This mix makes me theoretically the perfect Drake fan.
So thats jus me, I can break down what makes Drake great in my eyes but really the last bit is somethin unexplainable. Ive always wondered whey guys like Kiss receive little shine while guys who cant hold a candle to him are billed as the greatest thing since sliced bread and I realize (no offense to Jada) its the charisma. DISCLAIMER: No Im not tryin to start a Drake/Jadakiss beef nor am I even insinuating that Drake is better Im jus sayin that Drakes immeasurable charisma seperates him from the Lupe's, JColes, and Wales of the world who are quite similar and quite frankly jus as good lyrically (if not better) but who lack that certain something that causes people (men women and children alike) to dumb out.
This entire post sounds a lot like me justifying a man crush on Drake (maybe I am dont judge me) but it is in fact jus my attempt to explain the unexplainable. It was inspired by my randomizer jumping to Marvin's Room and me realizing how that song has turned the musical world on its ear in the last week. What can I say, he's on one:
